Instead of buying makeup one may use the following roots for paints for
pow-wows:
Blood root, (Sanguinaria officinalis) gives a red color.
Maple bark (boiled) gives a blue color.
Soot and bear fat gives a black color.
Chalk and bear fat gives a white color.
Boiled chokecherry gives ochre.
Elderberry
(smabucus nigra) Gives deep purple.
Cattail pollen and bear fat gives yellow.
Creeping fern pollen and bear fat
gives bright yellow. Baamapii
[Use cold creams because these paints are hard to
wash off.]
